    Initial Setup

    • To begin using Textfree, tap the app to launch it and tap "Create New." Choose a username and password, then enter your age, gender and email address. Tap "Create Account," then press "Accept" to agree to the terms and conditions. Verify your email address, and go back to Textfree's "Options" menu. You can begin texting, but to make calls, tap "Account Info," then tap "Get One!" where it says "Phone Number." Enter your ZIP code and you are assigned a local phone number.

    Sending Messages

    • To send a message in Textfree, tap the icon in the upper right corner that looks like a pencil and paper. Choose a contact from the list or enter a number in the "To" box. Type your message, then tap "Send." You can also tap the blue plus sign to add additional recipients, or use the camera icon to attach a picture. Picture options include the ability to take a new picture, paste emoticons or use pictures stored on the iPod. The length of time it takes to send a message depends on the speed of your Internet connection.

    Placing Calls

    • The dialpad icon at the top of the screen is used to make calls. Tap it, then enter a number the same way you would on a cellphone. Tap the green "Call" button and wait for the connection to be made. Each call is preceded by a short message from Textfree. Next to the "Call" button is a box that shows how many minutes you have left. If you tap it, you are given the option to purchase minutes or earn some. At the time of publication, the ability to earn free minutes for trying out new apps is no longer available.

    Optional Features

    • Tap the "Options" icon to view additional features. The "Hide Ads" option removes all ads for one year for a $6 fee. Add a custom ringtone, texting tone and wallpaper to personalize the app. Tap "Signature" to change the default message that displays at the bottom of each message. "Facebook Chat" lets you integrate your messages from Facebook. You will get a popup from Textfree each time a Facebook friend sends a message or initiates a chat.
