Running a 64-bit version of your operating system has a lot of benefits—primarily that your computer can now process data in 64-bit chunks, rather than the traditional 32-bit, leading to performance improvements. In order to take advantage of your more-efficient processor, though, you need to get 64-bit versions of your programs (assuming they exist; not all developers support 64-bit processing).

 

If you're running a 64-bit version of Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista, the standard version of iTunes that you download from Apple's site won't give you the benefits you want; it's 32 bit. Instead, you need to download the 64-bit version.

ITunes doesn't support the 64-bit edition of Windows XP Pro.

As a result, features—including burning CDs/DVDs—may not work, so keep that in mind before installing.

iTunes has been 64-bit by default in every version  since 10.4, so there is no need to install a special version.
