    • 1). Determine where wood trim is going to be used. Take into account the look and feel of a room. Will painted trim compliment the room's design better than natural wood that will be stained to keep the wood's natural appearance? Measure the length of the area that is going to be covered by the trim. Write down the length and where the trim is to be hung.

    • 2). Go to a home improvement store. Ask for sample pieces of molding shapes. Take the sample pieces back home and examine them where the trim is to be hung. Write down the sample pieces desired. Write down the total feet needed of each type of trim. Write down the measurements of where the trim is going to be cut.

    • 3). Return to the home improvement store. Look for the desired shapes in hardwoods; they resist cracking and warping. Select stain grade molding if the trim is to be left looking natural. Select primed finger joint or paint grade molding if the plan is to paint the trim.

    • 4). Ask the store to cut the trim to fit the measurements determined at home. Take all the trim to the checkout for purchase.
