How to Make Jewelry Pins From Wool Scraps
- 1). Draw a circle with a 4-inch diameter on a piece of card stock. Use a compass to make your circle as accurate as possible. Create two more circles on the card stock, one with a 3-inch diameter and one with a 1 1/2-inch diameter. These circles will become the templates you use to cut your flowers from wool felt.
- 2). Cut out the circles and place them on a piece of wool felt. Stack a few metal washers at the center of each template to hold it in place and use a disappearing-ink quilting marker to trace round the outside of each template. Remove the templates from the felt and cut out the circles with a pair of sharp fabric scissors.
- 3). Cut each circle to create fringe. Start at one point on the edge of your circle and cut until you are 1/8 inch from the center. Make cuts every 1/8 inch around the circumference of each circle.
- 4). Stack the fringed circles; the largest should sit at the bottom of the stack and the smallest should sit at the top. Place a button at the center of the stacked circles and sew the button in place with a sewing needle and thread. Sew through all three layers of wool felt as you secure the button in place. The finished flower will resemble a spider chrysanthemum.
- 5). Cut a leaf shape from a scrap of green wool. The leaf should measure about 3 1/2 inches in length and have a larger, rounded edge and a pointed edge. Use your scissors to cut two tiny holes through the middle of the leaf. Each hole should fall 3/4 inches away from one of the edges.
- 6). Insert either end of a 1 1/2-inch bar pin through the holes. Release the pin from the catch before positioning it on the leaf. Apply a bead of hot glue on the back of the bar pin and press the back side of the flower onto it. Hold it in place until the glue sets. When the glue has set, you will have completed your wool brooch.
