Quilting Ideas for Baby Shower Gifts
- Put out some squares of fabric and some fabric paint at the baby shower. Direct guests to paint on the squares for the baby, such as a personal message. Once finished, piece together all of the fabric pieces into a full quilt to give to the family once finished. This activity works well for multiple guests, but provide more fabric squares to each guest to create a bigger quilt.
- You could make the mother a unique quilted diaper bag, in any design they like. It is nice to have a 'dressy' diaper bag for formal occasions. Normal diaper bags tend to be pastel colored and covered in small animals. A good, plain, dark colored diaper bag would be very nice for the new parents to have for occasional use.
- A quilt tapestry for the wall adds decoration to a new baby room. The quilt may have the child's name sown across the middle or fabric that matches the color swatch of the baby's room. As this is different from a quilt that is designed to be used, you want to make something with more visual interest than quilts come with. Create blocks that have characters on them, or you could use small blocks of varying colors to create an image (like a boat or a butterfly. You could also create a basic quilt as a "background" and applique figures of dinosaurs, cats, or anything else to the wall hanging.
- Stuffed baby blocks are a "stash buster"- that is, they use up small materials left over from bigger projects. These are stuffed blocks with letters and numbers on them- they're soft enough that even a small baby can play with them and chew on them. Take six left over quilt blocks (or smaller squares) and back them with some scrap quilt backing. This will give the cubes a soft, quilted feel and make them a little more durable. Sew the six sides together, inside out, to form a cube- leaving part of one side un-sewn for turning. Turn the cube right-side out, and stuff with poly-fill.
