How to Choose Kitchen Rugs

    • 1). Measure the area of the kitchen where you want your rug. Be sure the rug will not block any doors. Decide what size you want your rug. For instance, decide if you want your rug to cover the majority of the kitchen or just one area.

    • 2). Create a swatch book of the colors and fabrics used in the kitchen. Cut small pieces of fabric from under chairs or in the hem of curtains. Use a leftover paint swatch or leftover wall paint for painting small pieces of paper. Or take a picture of the kitchen with a camera or cell phone.

    • 3). Visit furniture stores and rug stores with your swatch book. Think about what would serve as the most practical rug choice. Consider the color scheme, but remember that dark colors won't show dirt and food spills. For a durable fabric, choose polypropylene. This durable fiber is found in most kitchen rugs. Also consider the flooring in the kitchen. Hardwood or tile make cause rugs to slip, so a good choice would be a rug with a rubber backing. You can also use a rug pad to prevent slipping.

    • 4). Shop online. Look up some of the brands you found and stores and compare prices with online websites.

    • 5). Visit thrift stores. Kitchen rugs have a short life span. You can find a variety of kitchen rugs by looking around at thrift stores or flea markets.
