What Do Emus Eat?
- Emus in the wild eat grass, flowers, fruit, seeds and even insects. They also swallow large stones with their food to assist in grinding the food up in the gizzard to aid in digestion.
- Emus that are housed on a farm or ranch typically eat a specialized feed called "ratite feed." Consistency in diet is important for emus, especially those that are young, so most farmers stick to one brand.
- Emus under the age of six months are referred to as "chicks." Chicks are given a ratite feed called "ratite grower." Ratite grower feed is sometimes tricky to find so some farmers use turkey/game finisher instead.
- Emus love snack foods such as sliced fruit, especially thinly-sliced apples and grapes. According to sybilsden.com, emu owners report their birds enjoy snacks ranging from macaroni salad and potato salad to scrambled eggs and dog food.
