Position a Dumpster within a few feet of the roof's edge for minimal cleanup. - 2). Stretch a tarp across an end of the roof. Nail the tarp to the roof and stretch the other end to the Dumpster with bungee cords to create a chute. Debris can be loaded into the Dumpster by sliding the roofing material down the chute.
- 3). Remove the roofing material around penetrations such as plumbing stacks, chimneys or electrical masts. Yanking the top layer of roofing from around these areas will expose the flashing. Use a nail puller to remove nails in the flashing and roofing material. Keep the flashing intact because it can be salvaged and used during re-roofing.
- 4). Use the roofing shovel to tear up material starting at the furthest point from the Dumpster.
- 5). Pull all nails from the roof surface with a claw hammer or nail puller. Sweep the surface clean for the new roofing material.
