How to Make Metal Jewelry Chains
- 1). Hold a 5mm, 20-gauge jump ring firmly with your fingers on one side of the split. Grip the jump ring on the other side of the split with bent chain-nose pliers. Push the pliers forward to separate the split and open the jump ring. Open the ring just enough to slide another jump ring through the opening. Never pull the metal in opposite directions at the split or you will weaken the link. Repeat this step.
- 2). Slide a closed jump ring over one of the open jump rings. Close the open jump ring using the same technique as when you opened it. The two rings are hooked together, forming the beginning of your metal jewelry chain.
- 3). Add the remaining open jump ring to the chain by sliding it over the second closed jump ring. Add a new, closed jump ring over the open ring. Close the ring. You now have four links on your metal chain.
- 4). Continue to open a jump ring, add it to the end of the chain, add another closed ring and close the open ring. Make the metal jewelry chain as long as you like.
- 5). Open two 3mm, 24-gauge jump rings. Slide one over the last metal link on each end of the jewelry chain.
- 6). Slide one section of your jewelry clasp over each 3mm ring. Close the rings.
