When redecorating a room, a rain forest design can add a natural, exotic feeling. As you plan your decorating project, consider the spaces you have to use, the project budget, and how the new design elements will work with the existing decor in adjacent rooms. By incorporating subtle design elements, you can create a room that is reminiscent of a jungle lodge. - By using natural materials reminiscent of rain forest plants, you will create a subtle feeling of being outdoors in an exotic environment. Look for bamboo table runners, wicker lamp shades, furniture in a dark teak finish, or natural wooden photo frames. Stick to one or two wood types in the room to avoid chaos. When looking for furniture pieces, choose items that remind you of a jungle lodge.
- To give your rain forest room the sense of the dense jungle, use potted plants. Look for cascading plants and potted palms, and place them in the room where they will give an impression rather than be a focal point. Place cascading vine plants on high shelves, tuck potted palms in corners or peeking out from the side of a chair or entertainment system. This will give the room a subtle sense of rain forest life without an over-the-top statement.
- The rain forest is a riot of saturated greens, with touches of brown and bold tropical colors. Recreate a similar color scheme in your rain forest room for a sophisticated design scheme. Paint the walls a light shade of green or neutral beige to create a natural feeling without overwhelming the space. Look for furniture in deep greens, and use brown accent pillows, rugs and accents. To invoke a sense of tropical flowers, incorporate one or two splashes of bold color such as fuchsia or burnt orange.
- A standby of rain forest decor is the representation of tropical birds. With this design element, it is easy to become too literal, which can look cartoonish. Avoid full-color stuffed or ceramic parrots, and look instead for subtle ways to work in a bird silhouette. Consider a magazine rack with a wire-frame parrot pattern, a pillow with a subtle shade-on-shade bird silhouette pattern, or a lamp pull in a bird shape.
- A good way to add a stunning, full-color representation of the rain forest is through nature photography. Look for shots with a low depth of field, where the subject is in focus but the background is blurry. Rain forest photos offer the opportunity to add in bright pops of saturated colors: Look for photos of tropical vegetation, wildlife, flowers or panoramic shots.
