- 1). Deepen and flatten the crack using a chisel and hammer. Flatten the edges of the crack completely, so that the crack is a uniform depth at least 1 inch deep. This will help to give the patch work proper area to set.
- 2). Remove all dust and debris from the crack. Wire brush the sides to break off all loosened debris. Spray out the crack with compressed air or vacuum the area. The crack must be completely clean and dust free for the patch to hold.
- 3). Paint bonding adhesive to the edges, bottom and sides of the crack. This material will help the patch to seal against the surface, and prevent it from cracking loose along the seam later.
- 4). Mix concrete sealing compound or vinyl compound per product instructions. Different products require different additives, so mix accordingly.
- 5). Apply the patching compound to the crack with a flat mason's trowel. Fill in the entire cracked area, leaving no empty spaces or gaps. Scrape the trowel across the surface to flatten the repair against the wall. Allow the crack repair to dry per product instructions; some compounds may require you to apply small amounts of water during the curing process.
