Tinted Paste Wax

• Paste wax is the best product you can purchase to fill in minor scratches in hardwood floors. This product comes in a variety of tints to match virtually any type of hardwood floor. The surface immediately surrounding the scratch must first be prepared. Gently buff the scratch, making sure to only rub with the grain of the wood, with a fine steel wool pad. Keep the buffed area confined to the scratch, feathering only slightly to either side. Wipe away all dust and debris with a soft cotton cloth. Apply a small amount of paste wax to cheesecloth, then fold the cheesecloth over on top of the paste wax. This will prevent the paste wax from coming into direct contact with the floor. Place the cheesecloth on the floor over the scratch and buff in a circular motion, applying enough pressure to force the paste wax through the cheesecloth and into the scratch. Allow the paste wax to set for approximately five minutes, then buff to a shine.
  
  

Tinted Wood Filler

• Gouges in the floor are deep scratches that can't be buffed out with steel wool or covered up with a floor putty stick. Deep gouges require latex-based, stainable wood filler. Use a putty knife to fill in the gouge with the wood filler until it is level with the floor. Use a soft cotton cloth to wipe up any excess. Allow the filler to dry thoroughly, usually for several hours. Buff the area lightly with fine steel wool or fine-grit sandpaper. Stain the area to match the floor with a brush or cotton cloth (use rubber gloves to keep from getting stain on your hands).
