How to Sew Decorative Valances

    • 1). Measure the height of your window. Divide the height by six to determine the length of your finished valance. For example, if your window is 54 inches, the finished valance will be 9 inches long. Measure the width of the window. The width of your valance should longer by half than the width of the window. Add more to the width if you want a fuller valance. If your window is 30 inches wide, the valance will be at least 45 inches long.

    • 2). Measure and cut out your fabric. Add 5 inches to the length and 2 inches to the width to allow for seams and hems. If your finished valance will be 9 inches by 45 inches, cut a fabric rectangle that measures 14 inches by 47 inches.

    • 3). Fold the short sides of the valance over half an inch towards the wrong side of the fabric. Press, then fold the sides over another half inch. Press and pin in place. Stitch along the edge to secure.

    • 4). Fold the top of the long side of the valance over one inch, towards the wrong side of the fabric. Press and pin in place. Stitch in place along the edge. Fold the top over three inches and press and pin in place. Stitch along the edge. You should have made a long pocket along the top. You will insert the curtain rod through this pocket.

    • 5). Hem the bottom long edge of the fabric. Fold the edge of the fabric over 1/2 inch, towards the wrong side of the fabric. Press, then fold over another 1/2inch. Press, pin in place and stitch.

    • 6). Lay the valance out on your work surface. Pin the trim or ribbon to the bottom edge, on the right side of the valance. Stitch the trim to the valance. If you would prefer, you can hand stitch the trim instead of using your machine.

    • 7). Slide the valance onto the curtain rod and hang in the window. Fluff the valance and gather it on the rod so that it is equally distributed and looks balanced.
