How to Install Interior Molding

    • 1). Measure the width of the window opening, from corner to corner over the top, right on the edge of the casing (the wood border of the window), using a tape measure.

    • 2). Mark out the measurement onto a piece of molding with a pencil. Don't measure it from one end, but rather make a mark a few inches in from one end, then mark out the measurement from there.

    • 3). Set the molding face-up on a miter saw, positioned so the bottom edge of the trim faces the back fence. Slide the trim so one of the marks is in front of the blade. Turn the blade 45 degrees outward, pointing away from the measured section of the molding. Make the cut.

    • 4). Reposition the molding so the second mark is in front of the blade. Turn the blade 45 degrees in the opposite direction as before, which will again make it point outward. Make the cut.

    • 5). Hold the molding above the window, with the lower edge of the molding lined up with the edge of the window casing. The angles at the ends of the board should rise up off the corners. Shoot finish nails into the molding every 8 or 10 inches along the top and bottom edges of the piece, using a nail gun.

    • 6). Repeat the process for each of the three remaining sides of the window. The mitered ends of the pieces should butt up to one another to form the corners.

    • 7). Caulk around the trim, putting a thin bead of it everywhere the trim meets the wall or the window casing.
