    • 1). Start up iTunes and select the song you'd like to convert to a ring tone. The song has to be an MP3 file that is not DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected. Note that many songs purchased in the iTunes store are DRM protected. Songs ripped from your CDs or the Amazon store will work.

    • 2). Right click on the song and select "Get Info."

    • 3). Click on the "Options" tab.

    • 4). Check the boxes for "Start Time" and "Stop Time." Enter the start and stop times for the section of the song that you want to use as a ring tone. The times can't be more than 30 seconds apart -- that's the max length of a ring tone file.

    • 5). Click "OK." Right click the song and select "Create AAC Version." This should cause a new 30 second song clip to appear in the music library.

    • 6). Drag the new 30 second version of the song into the folder where you store your ring tones.

    • 7). Delete the 30 second song clip from your iTunes library. Make sure you undo the start and stop time changes you made to the original song.

    • 8). Open the folder where you placed the 30 second AAC song file from iTunes. Change the file extension to .m4r. Double click this new .m4r file and it should immediately be added to your ring tones library in iTunes.

    • 9). Sync your iPhone with your computer. When the sync is finished, go into settings and select the new ring tone.
