How to Install Cove Tile
- 1). Lay the cove base tiles out along the wall where they will be installed in a dry layout. A dry layout consists of laying the tiles without mortar to determine placement, cuts and grout joints. Lay the first tile in the center of the wall, and the next tiles evenly to the left and right for a balanced installation.
- 2). Mark the tiles to be cut with a straight edge and pencil. Cut the tiles on a tile saw and return them to the dry layout to double-check the fit before installation.
- 3). Spread a small amount of adhesive onto the wall to be tiled with the trowel. Rake the grooved edge of the tile through the mortar until the ridges are uniform in height.
- 4). Set the tiles into the mortar in the same layout determined by the dry layout, with the first tile in the center of the wall. Press each tile into the mortar firmly, and twist it slightly into place to ensure a good bond.
- 5). Allow the mortar to set up for 24 hours and then grout the cove tiles by packing the joints between them with grout, using the grout float. Wipe up excess grout with a damp sponge, taking care not to overwet or "wash" the grout, as this can lead to a reduction in grout color. Allow the grout to set up for an additional 24 hours.
