How to Cover Tile Backsplashes

    • 1). Mark out your backsplash area, using your tape measure, metal square and pencil. Make sure the corners are 90 degrees all around, and that the edges are level and plumb (straight up and down). Mark a vertical line through the middle of the marked-out area.

    • 2). Apply thinset mortar over the backsplash area with your mortar trowel. You should still be able to see the vertical line through the mortar.

    • 3). Set wall tiles in place in the area, starting at the bottom middle, on either side of the vertical line and working your way out and up. Let the self-spacing nubs at the sides of the tiles keep them consistently spaced from each other, and from the countertop.

    • 4). Hang trim tiles around the outer perimeter to form the border. Cut the tiles at the edges, as needed, on your tile cutter.

    • 5). Let the tiles set overnight. Grout them with your grout float, spreading the grout over the surface and forcing it into the lines. Don't grout the line between the bottom of the lowest row of tiles and the countertop. Use a damp sponge to wipe up the excess grout. Let the grout set overnight.

    • 6). Run a bead of caulk along the line between the tiles and the countertop.
