How to Create an iPod Application
- 1). Brainstorm ideas and details about your application in your notebook. Include pictures, graphics, and charts if needed. During this process, it's helpful to experiment with other iPod applications similar to yours that are already being sold. Write down the positive and negative points about those apps, and thoughts on how you can make yours a step above the competition.
- 2). Register to become an iPhone App Developer at the iPhone Dev Center. The minimum fee for registration is $99. To develop iPod applications, you must have an Intel-based Mac with Mac OS X Leopard.
- 3). Download and read the Getting Started Documents at the iPhone Dev Center. The center also offers extra reading material and resources for new iPod app developers.
- 4). If you have programming experience and knowledge of Apple's software development kit (SDK) and wish to code and design the app yourself, begin by coding the core of your iPod app, then move on to the visual design.
If you have little to no experience but want to learn, there are many books available, such as "Beginning iPhone 3 Development." If not, you can hire a developer to work with on creating your iPod application. One resource is iPhoneAppCoder. - 5). Set a price for your iPod application. Do not be tempted to price the app low in the hopes that more customers will download it. For information and help on pricing iPod apps, visit ReadWriteWeb (see References).
- 6). Write a summary that describes your application in a way that will entice customers to put on your website and App Store page. If you have no writing experience and/or website experience, collaborate with someone who does. Your app will not have customers if they can't find it and read about it online.
- 7). Set up a contact and support system. This can simply be an email address or an entire forum. The most important thing is for customers to be able to reach you or someone who can help when your iPod app has a problem.
