  Installing a backsplash of ceramic, porcelain or clay tile is expensive and time consuming. To create an effective backsplash, use material that is fireproof and easily cleaned. Install a backsplash quickly and easily, by using an alternative to the stone materials traditionally used as backsplashes.
  
  

Thermoplastic or Metal Panels

• Available in kits, panels made of metal or heat-resistant thermoplastic make nice looking backsplashes. They are easily installed by the average do-it-yourself homeowner without any special tools. Simply cut them with regular scissors, and glue them to the wall.
  
  

Vinyl Tiles

• Available in a wide range of colors and styles, vinyl tiles usually used on the floor make an attractive backsplash. Cut the tiles with a simple utility knife, if needed, and adhere them to the wall with regular vinyl adhesive.
  
  

Peel and Stick Metal Tiles

• Easily cut to size with a kitchen scissors, peel and stick metal tiles make a convenient backsplash. They come in 4 1/4-inch squares and are easily installed; simply peel off the adhesive backing, and press the tiles in place.
  
  

Wood Paneling

• Wood paneling, such as wainscoting or beadboard, is installed as a kitchen backsplash. Because of the nature of wood, it is best to paint paneling used as a kitchen backsplash to protect it from stains and moisture, or finish it with a marine varnish that resists moisture. Floor boards normally used for hardwood floors are installed vertically on the walls to create a backsplash.

• Tiles made of cork are available with peel and stick backing. The tiles are simple to cut with a utility knife, making installation a breeze. The color of cork is easily changed with wood stain for a customized backsplash.
