How to Match Broken Floor Tile
- 1). Cut through the grout all the way around the tile with a grout saw. Avoid cutting the edges of the tiles. Use a screwdriver to carefully pry up the first piece of the broken tile. Using a hammer and chisel, remove the rest of the tile and thin-set mortar underneath. Try to avoid damaging the subfloor when removing the mortar. Save the largest piece of the broken tile.
- 2). Clean half of the large piece thoroughly with a tile cleaner. Floor tile darkens as it ages from ground-in dirt and grime. Cleaning half of the tile piece allows you to see the original pattern and colors, While you can often get a brand new tile in the original pattern, the colors may have changed over time and may not match perfectly.
- 3). Check your garage for matching tiles. The best match for a broken tile will always come from the same box as the original. Many builders or contractors will leave extras for just such a situation. Tiles made at the same time using the same pigment will age similarly.
- 4). Take the tile piece to the tile store or home improvement store. Consult a salesperson for patterns and colors they have that might best match your aged tile.
- 5). Purchase an unglazed tile and have it professionally glazed to match, if no matching tile can be found.
