It's time to nominate your favorite Mac applications for the Readers' Choice Awards 2011. About: Macs is participating for the second year in a row, and is accepting nominations in 7 categories.
Nominate Your Favorite Mac Software
About.com's 2011 Readers' Choice Awards will showcase the best products, features, and services in multiple categories, from technology to hobbies to parenting. Nominations will be accepted from Jan. 13 to Feb. 4 at 11:59 p.m. EST.
This year, we have changed the About: Macs categories slightly. We dropped a few categories, and added a new one. We also changed how we accept nominations. Last year, we asked you to make nominations publicly. But we discovered that many of you wouldn't bother to nominate a product if someone else already had, which meant some products received more nominations than others, even though they weren't actually more popular.
So this year, nominations will be submitted through a blind process. Be sure to nominate your favorite products, even if you think someone else may have already nominated them. We will then pick up to five top nominees in each category to advance to the voting round.
The About: Macs Categories for The Reader's Choice Awards 2011
Best Mac System Utilities
The Best Mac System Utility category is for software designed primarily to enhance the capabilities of the OS. This includes applications that allow access to hidden or hard-to-use OS X features, applications that automate or perform system services for the user, and applications that provide features not yet available in OS X.
If you have a favorite Mac System Utility, let us know by nominating it for a Readers' Choice Award 2011.
Best Mac Backup Application
The Best Mac Backup Application category is open to any application that, at a minimum, performs a backup of a user's data. Applications in this category may also provide other services, such as backing up the entire system, creating archives, and creating clones. All nominations in this category should be for applications that perform local backups, either on the user's Mac or on local network resources. You may nominate backup applications that use a server on the Internet, but they must also be capable of local backup and restore functions.
Best Mac Browser
The Best Mac Browser category is open to nominations for applications that provide general-purpose web browsing capabilities. Browsers in this category should be able to access any web site, provide bookmark services, support plug-ins, and run basic web applications without issues.
Best Application for Running Windows
The Best Application for Running Windows category is open to any application or system that allows you to run Windows or Windows applications on a Mac. Many systems in this category can run more than just Windows, but being able to use that 'other' OS is the minimum requirement for nomination.
Best Word Processor
The Best Mac Word Processor category is open to any application that provides word processing capabilities. This includes stand-alone applications and word processors that are part of a bundled suite of tools. Please don't nominate code editors in this category unless they can also be used for general-purpose word processing.
Best Mac Consumer Image Editor
The Best Mac Consumer Image Editor category is open to any software that is used for editing images. We're looking for image editing applications that are geared towards general consumers, not professionals. This doesn't mean the application can't have professional-level features, only that its target audience must be amateurs and hobbyists.
Best Mac Home Theater Application or Product
A new category this year was propelled by the popularity of using the Mac with HDTVs. We're looking for applications that you use for watching, capturing, controlling, or in any other way working with video, pictures, and music in your home entertainment system. A Mac or Apple product must be involved. We will also accept nominations for hardware devices, such as remotes, video converters and capture devices, streaming devices, etc. And yes, they also must be able to work with a Mac to be accepted in this category.
How to Nominate
This year, we're accepting nominations using a simple form. All of the categories are present on the nomination form, although you don't have to enter a nomination in every category. The form asks for your name and email address, but if you wish to remain anonymous, that's OK, too.
Click the link below to start the nomination process, and thanks for participating. Oh, and please let your friends know. The more nominations, the merrier!
