    • 1). Measure the length and width of the attic to determine the number of square feet in the space. You must use a minimum number of bags for every 1,000 square feet of insulated space, so you must determine the approximate number of square feet of the attic. The number of bags needed varies with each insulation manufacturer.

    • 2). Staple vent chutes over eaves for ventilation and do not block these vents with insulation.

    • 3). Divide the attic into four equal quadrants to make it easier to keep track of the bags of insulation as you install them. Divide the total number of bags by four to see how many bags you will install in each area to avoid over or under insulating one area.

    • 4). Stand up an attic ruler in each of the four quadrants to keep track of the depth of the insulation as you install it.

    • 5). Put on protective clothing including a respirator, gloves and a long sleeve shirt or coveralls.

    • 6). Open the valve on the blowing machine hopper and fill the hopper with insulation.

    • 7). Close the hopper and turn on the machine.

    • 8). Blow insulation from right to left following the floor joists, beginning in the corner and working your way to the center of the room. Hold the hose parallel to the floor and step only on floor joists as you move across the attic. Blow insulation carefully around obstructions and in corners to ensure the insulation in these areas is at the proper depth.

    • 9). Stop after each quadrant is filled with insulation to verify that you have used the appropriate number of bags and achieved the proper insulation depth in the area.

Fill in any low or shallow areas and continue into the remaining quadrants until all the insulation has been installed.
