    • 1). Connect your iPod to your computer using your USB iPod cable, which features a long connector and short connector. The short connector plugs into an available USB port on your computer (which features a three-pointed trident symbol directly above) and the long connector plugs into the bottom of your iPod. If using an iPod Shuffle, your cable will instead feature a 3.5mm plug that inserts into your headphone jack. If you have a wall charger for your iPod (sold separately), you can connect it directly to an electrical socket.

    • 2). Charge your iPod for approximately three to four hours. When the iPod is finished charging, the battery indicator on your screen will appear completely filled in with the color green, and the word "Charged" will appear on the screen.

    • 3). Update your iPod software. Connect the iPod to your computer (unless already connected), open your iTunes software, click the "iPod" symbol in the left column, and select the "Check for Update" option. If Apple finds an available update, click the "Update" button. Apple recommends keeping your iPod updating as a way of optimizing your battery's performance, ensuring the longest amount of available use between charges.

    • 4). Optimize your battery life in other ways. While playing your iPod, limit your use of the "Forward," "Rewind" and "Skip" processes during playback. Set the "Hold" switch appearing along the top of your iPod to the "On" position during playback and during periods of inactivity. This will protect the device from accidental commands. Also, try to load your iPod with compressed songs, such as MP3 files and M4A files, as opposed to uncompressed songs, such as AIFF files and WAV files. If using an iPod Touch, limit your use of Wi-Fi and game play.
