How to Create Fairy Wings
- 1). Make a pattern: Draw an outline of your wing on the cardboard/paper and cut it out. Take into account whether you want the wings to be big or small, simple or complicated, realistic like butterfly wings or inspired by fantasy. One idea is to use a pattern; it will help you make your wings symmetrical and achieve the shape you want.
- 2). Bend the wire to the shape of your pattern. If you are having trouble, try taping part of the wire to the pattern while you work. A simple idea is to make a basic figure eight out of the wire and then bend it to fit your pattern and create a more elaborate shape.
- 3). Pull a leg of pantyhose over each wing, pulling it tight and cutting off the foot and any excess. Sew along the inside of the wire to keep it in place. Choose a complementary thread, since it will be visible. If you are using fabric, use the wing pattern to cut the fabric, adding about an inch all the way around. Sew the fabric onto the wire by bending the edge of the fabric over the edge and stitching the fabric to itself. Keep in mind that both sides of the fabric will be in view, so it's best to choose one that is similar on both sides, such is as gauze or silk.
- 4). Make the ribbon into two loops that fit over your shoulders and sew the centers to the centers of the wings. You can then wear the wings like a backpack.
- 5). Decorate your wings with the materials you have chosen. Glitter, flowers, leaves, and jewels can all be sewn or glued onto your wings. Use your imagination!
