Directions for a Layer Cake Quilt
- 1). Separate the Layer Cake material or packet into three groups of fabrics. Use 30 10"X10" squares as the main blocks, set aside five 10"X10" squares for sashing and set aside the remaining squares for your stash. You won't use these final pieces.
- 2). Cut 2 inches from one side of each of the five sashing blocks. This will give you an 8"X10" rectangle. Do the same with the 30 main blocks. Set aside the 2-inch strips; they will be used in the second border of the quilt.
- 3). Cut the sashing blocks in half vertically and then horizontally to create four 4"X5" rectangles from each of the bigger squares.
- 4). Create your sub-cuts from the sashing fabrics. You need four 4"X10" strips, five 5"X10"strips, eight 3 ¼"X10" strips (for the first border) and eight 5"X10" strips (for the first border).
- 5). Cut 24 horizontal rectangles from the 5-inch strips you created in Step 4. Cut them 5"X8".
- 6). Cut 25 vertical rectangles that are 4"X10" from the strips you created in Step 4.
- 7). Lay out your quilt. Place six blocks across, using the vertical sashing pieces between each block. Place five blocks down, using the horizontal sashings between each block. As you fill out the quilt, use the scraps from the strips you cut to fill in the gaps between the sashing pieces at the corner of each block.
- 8). Sew one row of blocks and sashing pieces together using a ¼-inch seam allowance. Continue sewing all rows. Iron the seams open and then sew the rows together using a ¼-inch seam allowance. Iron the seams open.
- 9). Sew the 8 3 ¼" strips together to create four double strips and then sew each double strip to one side -- left, right, top and bottom -- of the quilt.
- 10
Sew the 35 2-inch strips created in Step 1 into 4 sets of eight strips, matched randomly. You should have four skinny strips. Sew one strip to each side of the quilt. Three of the strips will not be used. - 11
Sew the eight remaining 5-inch strips into four double strips. Set the left and right borders to the quilt and then the top and bottom borders. - 12
Bind and quilt the quilt using your favorite binding technique and quilting stitch.
