How to Do Amish Basket Weaving
- 1). Fill a 20-gallon bucket with hot water.
- 2). Place 20 to 30 basketry reeds, each measuring 48 inches, into the hot water. Let the reeds soak for 30 minutes to soften.
- 3). Place two reeds into a cross onto a flat surface. Position the reeds so they are perpendicular to each other.
- 4). Place two more reeds diagonally across the perpendicular reeds to create an "X" over the reeds.
- 5). Insert a reed into the bottom of the reed base, and weave the reed back and forth through the reed base. When the weaving is at least 6 inches in diameter, bend the remaining reeds from the base upward.
- 6). Continue weaving reeds around the reed base form until the basket is as tall as you prefer. Trim off the excess length on the reeds from the base using shears, leaving 2 inches in length on all of the reeds.
- 7). Tuck the reeds from the base into the inside edge of the basket, and insert the ends into the weaving.
- 8). Allow the Amish basket to dry for 6 hours before using it to hold objects.
