How to Replace Hung Windows

    • 1). Measure the window opening with the existing windows in it, opening and closing them as needed to access the inner edges of the opening. Find the width and height of the opening from inside the tracks that the sashes sit in. Subtract 1/2 inch from each measurement.

    • 2). Order your window unit, using the two adjusted measurements. For example, if the window opening is 60 inches high by 32 1/4 inches wide, order a unit that's 59 1/2 inches high by 31 3/4 inches wide. Acquire the new window unit before proceeding.

    • 3). Remove the trim from the inner edge of the window opening, using your hammer and pry bar and holding the sashes in place. Keep the trim intact and set it aside. Pull out the sashes.

    • 4). Lay a strip of insulation along the bottom span of the opening. Stand the base of the replacement window on the insulation. Push the whole unit up and into the opening, letting it come to rest against the border of the trim around the exterior side. Push more insulation in around the sides as you push the unit in.

    • 5). Stick shims under the unit, and to the sides of it, to get it level. Check the window with your carpenter's level to make sure it's standing straight and level. Drive 3-inch galvanized screws with your screw gun through the sides of the unit and into the surrounding frame, through the provided screw holes.

    • 6). Cut off any part of the shims that are sticking out, using a razor knife. Reattach the trim around the window with your trim nailer. Caulk the joints between the trim and the window unit.
