How to Weave Rag Rug Crafts
- 1). Place a large piece of corrugated cardboard in front of you. Make slits down one side of the cardboard. Make a slit every ½-inch and make the slits about 2 inches apart. Leave 2 to 3 inches at each end. Count the number of slits in the cardboard.
- 2). Tear the fabric strips from old bed sheets and other linens. Make each strip about 1 ½ inches wide. You will need at least 300 to 400 strips, depending on the size rug you would like. Gather the strips into groups. Make a group of 10 for each slit in the cardboard. Set aside the remaining strips for weaving.
- 3). Gather the strips into groups. Make a group of 10 for each slit in the cardboard. Set aside the remaining strips for weaving. Slide one group of 10 strips into the first slit on the cardboard. Leave a 6-inch-long end hanging over the cardboard. Do the same to fill the slits with the strips.
- 4). Thread one of the remaining strips through the eye of a tapestry needle. Pull the strip through the needle to double the fabric. Tie a knot in the end of the fabric strip and then tie the strip to the first group of strips in the cardboard. Weave the strip over the first group of strips in the cardboard and then under the second group. Continue until you reach the end and then continue weaving on the next row.
- 5). Knot the strip to the grouped strips when you run out of fabric and insert a new strip onto the needle. Continue weaving the strips through the grouped strips until you reach about 6 inches from the ends of the groups. Knot the weaving strip to the grouped strips.
