How to Pick Your Own Hamper

    • 1). Look at the location in which you plan to store the hamper and note how much space you need in order to house it. If your hamper will sit in a closet where it will not be seen, you don't need to worry too much about its appearance. A simple plastic hamper will likely do the trick. In addition, if you don't have much space, you will need to go for a small hamper, as opposed to a large, four-section sorting hamper. If your hamper will sit front and center in a room and will be seen often, purchase one that is made from decorative material, such as wicker or finished wood.

    • 2). Ask yourself how often you will use the hamper. If you constantly place dirty clothes in the hamper to take to the wash, you will require a durable hamper that you can easily transport. Plastic or vinyl hampers will likely be ideal, as they are lightweight and some even come with wheels. If your hamper isn't used all that often and you don't plan on carrying it to the laundry room, you could go with a heavier wooden model that will add decoration to its environment while still being functional.

    • 3). Ask yourself who will be using the hamper. If the hamper will only hold clothes from a few people, you could go with the more decorative and smaller types of hampers. If you have a large family, go for a durable, large plastic hamper. These types of hampers can hold large amounts of clothes and can stand up to being handled by children. You could also go with large hampers that have different sections for sorting clothes, which can make wash time easier.
