How to Measure for Replacement Casement Windows
- 1). Remove the nails around the exterior trim of your windows with the backside of a claw hammer or a crowbar. Lift away each piece of trim as it is loosened from around the casement window.
- 2). Remove any padding or filler until you can see the entire outside depth of your casement window.
- 3). Use your measuring tape to measure the height on both sides of the outdoor face of your window. Measure inside the frame so that the frame measurement is not included. You must measure both because casement windows in older homes are often uneven.
- 4). Measure across the top and bottom widths of the outside face of the window, inside the frame. Again, these numbers may not match, so it is necessary to do both.
- 5). Measure the outside depth of your window; that is, the distance from the outside edge of the bottom sill up to the actual window.
- 6). Move indoors and repeat each measurement for the indoor face of your casement window. Older windows were often made by hand and the inside measurements may be different than the outside measurements.
- 7). Use these measurements to purchase a replacement casement window. Realize that, if your existing window is uneven, your new window may need to be shimmed to fit.
