- 1). Locate or purchase an egress window and frame. Egress windows are windows that meet specific codes and regulations for safety and emergency exit from a structure. When installed in homes, egress windows must be large enough for a firefighter, in full gear, to enter the home. You may already have egress windows installed in your basement. If not, they can be installed in a new location or to replace existing basement windows. You can choose any size that fits your design requirements, as long as they meet the minimum size requirement of your local building code. Quality egress windows are insulated, constructed of safety glass and have a solid metal frame, quick-release grate and a Plexiglas cover.
- 2). Select a "dome" type cover for your window well. The taller type dome design allows for taller plants and better utilization of the space as a green house. Simply add vinyl coated plastic shelving and your mini-greenhouse is ready for seed trays or plants. Plastic coated shelves are available in a wide variety of sizes and configurations. Order online or purchase from local building supply centers. Shelves are installed on easy-to-attach, screw-in brackets mounted on the side walls of the window well.
- 3). Use flower pots with attached drain trays, or use a liner or drain tray under your plants to catch watch spills or drips. Most plants will grow well with the light provided by the egress window. If more light is desired, clamp-on reflector light fixtures will provide additional light as needed.
