    • 1). Locate the error name at the top of the screen in all capital letters with underscored spaces in between each word.

    • 2). Locate the "Troubleshooting Advice" section. It will not always be present, but most of the time when an error screen occurs, it will provide you with some advice on how to solve the issue at hand. It will often suggest restarting your computer. Before you restart, write down the exact error code that is displayed. This code will sit between two paragraphs of regular text and is in all capital letters and numbers.

    • 3). Locate the "Memory Dump" section. When an error occurs, Windows dumps the information about the crash into a file on your computer. If you decide to contact technical support staff about the issue, they will help you navigate to this folder so that they can better understand the problem.

    • 4). Locate the "Technical Information" section. This portion of the error page explains the cause of the crash in hexidecimal form similar to the "Trouble Shooting" advice section code. The first set of numbers and letters decodes and translates the cause of the crash. This set of numbers precedes four other sets of numbers listed within parenthesis. The specific driver that is associated with the crash is listed on the line directly below it.

    • 5). Reboot your computer. Learn more about what specific error titles mean by writing them down exactly and researching the codes online.
