How to Crochet a Turtleneck Sweater
- 1). Crochet the body of the turtleneck sweater. While crocheting a sweater may seem intimidating for some beginning crocheters, simple patterns can make the project a breeze. Sweaters that are crocheted in pieces, and then later sewn together, are a great option for people who are not familiar with certain crocheting intricacies. Circular sweaters that feature a decreasing number of stitches under the arms and patterns that rely on the use of individually crocheted squares to form the body of the sweater are two popular choices that can simplify this process.
- 2). Begin to crochet the turtleneck collar. With the hook that was used to form the body of the crocheted sweater and a slip stitch, attach a new piece of yarn to one of the shoulder seams. Single crochet and chain 1 around the perimeter of the neck opening, maintaining an even base from which the rest of the turtleneck collar can be attached. Join the first single crochet stitch with a slip stitch. Switch to a smaller size of hook needles, and chain 41 additional stitches.
- 3). Using the smaller set of hook needles, single crochet the second chain. Continue to single crochet each stitch across, for a total of 40 additional crochet stitches. Use a slip stitch to form the next free single stitch on the neck side of the collar. The first row of the turtleneck collar has been completed.
- 4). Turn the project around, and begin working from the opposite direction. Single crochet in the back loops of all of the stitches previously formed, for a total of 40 stitches. Chain 1 and continue to single crochet across the remainder of the collar. Tie off the yarn, and remove the loose end carefully with a sharp scissors.
- 5). Attach the two edges of the turtleneck collar with a tapestry needle and a piece of thread. Fold down the collar towards the body of the crocheted sweater.
