When remodeling your kitchen, consider installing a wall oven. You will avoid bending over to remove items from range oven. Since one person can use the separate wall oven to bake without interrupting another person cooking on the stove top, you may find it more convenient for a busy kitchen. Choose from several features to make the combination to fit your family's food-preparation needs.

    Size

    • Wall ovens come in different sizes. Make the appropriate choice so the oven will the fit a cabinet that houses it. They typically come in widths of 24, 27 or 30 inches. The height of the oven will vary based on whether you buy single oven, oven and a half or double wall oven. If you have a large family or tend to cook several dishes at one time, opt for the 30-inch wide oven if you can. A double wall oven comes in handy when you need to prepare dishes at different temperatures.

    Cooking Method

    • When selecting a wall oven, you can choose gas or electric. Since the gas version has a flame, it heats faster and retains nutrients and juices of meats as it broils them. Electric wall ovens tend to have a larger capacity than their gas counterparts, and they are easier to install. They need to be vented to the outside of the house. Whether you choose gas or electric, you still may select from conventional, convection or steam cooking heat. Convection uses a fan to spread heat and evenly cook food. Since it cooks 30 percent faster than a conventional oven, a busy family might enjoy this choice. Steam heats water to accomplish even baking, and it tends to retain more vitamins than other cooking methods. It doesn't brown food, so you may want to choose the steam option if you plan to do double ovens. You can use convection or conventional heat to brown the food. Some electric wall ovens feature trivection cooking, which combines thermal heat, convection and microwave energy to reduce cooking time.

    Price

    • In 2010, the price of a wall oven can start as low as $400 and go up to $3,000 or more. The conventional heating method costs less. According to the website Food and Home, plan to spend $600 to $900 for a single electric convection oven; gas may cost a little more. A double wall oven ranges from $1,200 to $4,000 depending on features. Steam ovens, the most expensive, run from $1,500 to $5,000. Electric wall ovens cost less than gas ovens, but the gas can cost less to operate.

    Features

    • You can choose from black, white or stainless steel finishes for a wall oven. You can choose a double version that features two different cooking methods. Another choice is to install a wall oven/microwave combination. Choose from a wall oven with mechanical dials or electronic touch controls. If you select a model with multiple racks and different positions for the oven racks, you will have more versatility when it comes to cooking several items at a time.
