How to Build a Children's Wooden Step Stool
- 1). Measure and mark a piece of the pine wood to be 20 inches long by 9.25 inches wide. This will be the seat of the step stool.
- 2). Measure and mark a piece of the pine wood to be 15 inches long by 3.5 inches wide. This will be the cleat that adds support to the seat of the step stool.
- 3). Measure and mark four rectangular-shaped pieces of pine wood to be 14 inches long by 3.75 inches wide. Use a protractor to measure and mark a 10 degree angle across the short sides of each piece to create the parallelogram shape you'll need for the legs of the step stool. They need to be this shape so the ends of each piece are flat on the floor when they angle toward each other like a capital "A."
- 4). Measure and mark two pieces of pine wood to be 6.5 inches long by 3 inches wide. Use a protractor to measure and mark a 10 degree angle across the long side of each piece thus giving you the trapezoid shape you'll need for the spacers that add support to each side of the step stool.
- 5). Use the skill saw to cut out the separate pieces of wood.
- 6). Use a pencil to mark spaces for the dowels on the top of the seat. Place the first mark in the center of the seat. Place two more on either side of the center mark equidistant from each other at a space of 4 1/8 inches horizontally across the 20-inch-long seat. These will be for the three dowels that hold the cleat in place and the two farthest dowels that hold the legs in place.
- 7). Place a mark 4 1/8 inches above and 4 1/8 inches below the final mark at each end of the step stool. These are for the two additional dowels on each side that will hold the legs in place.
- 8). Position the cleat parallel to the step stool seat in the center of the wood. Glue the cleat into this position on the bottom of the step stool seat and hold it in position using a clamp on either end of the cleat.
- 9). Drill the holes that are marked on top of the seat for the dowels. Glue and hammer the dowels into place to further secure the cleat.

Glue the spacer between two legs of the step stool as they lean against each other like a capital "A." Do the same with the other spacer and other two legs. - 11
Center the first pair of legs on one side of the bottom of the seat against the cleat. Drill a hole for the dowel against the spacer and into the edge of the cleat. Glue and hammer a dowel into the hole so it holds the legs tight against the cleat through the spacer. Repeat this for the other pair of legs. - 12
Drill the holes that are marked over the legs on top of the step stool seat for the dowels. Glue and hammer the dowels into place to further secure the legs. - 13
Use sandpaper to smooth the edges and corners of the step stool.
