How to Tighten the Floor Boards on a Mobile Home
- 1). Spread graphite powder over the squeaking seams.
- 2). Put towels over the powdered seams and walk back and forth over them, working the powder into the spaces. Repeat this process a few times, vacuuming up any remaining graphite. If squeaks remain, continue to the next step.
- 3). Tighten the floorboards if there is visible movement of the floor when it is walked on. Make pilot holes through the floorboards (but not through the subfloor) with a power drill. Drill away from the edges of the boards as a hole there could crack the tongue-in-groove connections. Use a 6d spiral floor nail and nail down any loose boards.
- 4). Set the nails with a nail set and then fill in the depression with wax wood filler. If the squeak persists and you can access under the subfloor, continue to the final step.
- 5). Go to the crawl space beneath the squeaking floor in your mobile home. Have someone walk on the floor above you and determine where the squeak is occurring.
- 6). Use a wood shim with some carpenter's glue, and fill in any gaps between the floor joist and the subfloor beneath the noisy boards.
