How to Edit a Registry From a Recovery Console
- 1). Type "Regedit" in the "Start" menu and press "Enter" to open the Windows registry.
- 2). Click "File" > "Export." The registry backup window will open.
- 3). Type a name for the backup file and click "Save." Windows will back up the registry and save in the location that you specified.
- 1). Insert the Windows CD into the CD drive and reboot the PC. Watch the boot process carefully.
- 2). Press "R" when you see "Welcome to Setup" appear on the screen. Windows will prompt you for a password.
- 3). Type the administrator password if you have one. Otherwise, leave it blank.
- 4). Press "Enter" to display the Windows command line.
- 1). Type "Reg /?" without the quotation marks to view a list of available registry commands. These commands include "Add," "Delete," "Query," "Copy" and "Save."
- 2). Type "Reg /? Query /?" without the quotation marks and press "Enter." Windows will list the syntax of the "Query" command. Use this syntax to learn the syntax of any registry command. For example, to learn how to add a registry key, type "Reg /? Add /?" without the quotation marks.
- 3). Edit the registry by executing these commands. Windows will display the status of each operation after you execute a command.
- 4). Type "Exit" when you are done, and press "Enter" to close the recovery console.
