How to Install a Solar Energy System
- 1). Purchase solar energy panels from a reliable and reputable retailer. Before making the final purchase, make sure you check the prices and reviews from three to five different stores.
- 2). Choose the place where you want to mount the solar energy system. Usually, the rooftop of the building is considered the most suitable place for installing solar cells. Find a spot on the roof that receives direct sunlight throughout the day.
- 3). Purchase solar mounts that are compatible with your solar panels. Go through the instructions manual of the panels to find which mounts are most suitable. Some of the commonly used mounts include roof-ground mounts, flush mounts and pole mounts.
- 4). Find the roof supporting beams with the help of a stud finder. Place the mounts on top of the supporting beams. Now pre-drill mounting holes using a pilot drill bit. These holes will help avoid cracking and splitting of supporting beams. Drill mounts and use bolts to hold them firmly in place.
- 5). Prevent leakage in your roof by placing metal flashing over the panel mounts. Leakages can possibly arise during the drilling process, and it is best to take precautionary measures. Another option is to mop the roof with a paste of hot tar.
- 6). Secure the metal rails to the mounts using stainless steel bolts (3/8 inch). Solar panels are mounted on the mount system alongside these rails.
- 7). Install the panels along the metal rails. Open the junction box located on the back of each solar panel and connect all the panels together. When you reach the last panel, run the wires from there to a separate junction box. Now run a conduit from the solar inverter to the solar panels. Do not forget to close the junction boxes afterward.
