How to Upgrade Windows & Migrate Settings
- 1). Download and run Microsoft's Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to determine if your hardware is capable of running Windows 7 (see Resources). Be sure to turn on all devices that you intend to use with this computer so that the tool can make a complete determination. You can run this on Vista or XP. The Upgrade Advisor will give you a hardware compatibility report. Carefully look over this report to see if you need to resolve any issues before installing Windows 7. Visit the Windows 7 Compatibility Center for information on what will work with Windows 7.
- 2). Back up your system so that if something goes wrong, you can recover your data and applications. Although the Microsoft tool works quite well, it is important to remember that things can happen to derail your upgrade/migration, such as a power outage.
- 3). Insert the Windows 7 install media if you are running an upgradable version of Windows Vista. When you see the "Install Windows" page, click "Install now." If your computer is connected to the Internet, get the latest updates. Accept the license terms and click "Next." When presented with the install options, select "Upgrade." The Windows 7 install procedure will preserve your data, applications and settings so that you will not need to re-install them. Skip to Step 5.
- 4). Save your files and settings on another computer, USB drive, external hard drive or a network share if you are running Windows XP or a version of Vista that cannot be upgraded. Install Windows 7 on your computer. Click "Start" and type "Easy Transfer" in the search box. Click on "Windows Easy Transfer" in the "Results" box. Provide confirmation or an administrator password if prompted. Windows 7 will now transfer your files and settings.
- 5). Reshare your shared printers. Click "Start" and "Devices and Printers." Locate the printer you want to share, and right-click on it. Click "Printer properties," and on the "Sharing" tab, select "Share this printer." Click "OK."
