How to Extend Two 4X4s Together to Make it Longer
- 1). Lay one 4-by-4 flat. Measure 12 inches from one corner and mark that point. Lay a straight edge from the opposite corner on the same end to the mark. Draw a diagonal line along the straight edge.
- 2). Cut through the 4-by-4 along the line. You should now have a 4-by-4 with a 12-inch spearlike point on one end.
- 3). Lay the spear-tipped 4-by-4 on top of the other 4-by-4 flush with the end. Trace the spear tip onto the other 4-by-4. Cut the spear tip on the other 4-by-4.
- 4). Spread glue on both freshly cut spear tips. Place the 4-by-4s end to end and mate the two glued edges. Shoot 10 pin nails through the ends of the joint on both sides.
- 5). Place clamps across the joint two inches apart. Tighten the clamps until glue oozes out the crack on both sides. Wait 24 hours for the glue to dry before removing the clamps.
