How to Make a Human Heart Out of Cardboard

    • 1). Visit your library and check out a medical text about cardiovascular health. Skim through the text until you find a descriptive two-dimensional image of a human heart. Place a piece of tracing paper over it and trace the heart.

    • 2). Place your traced image on a piece of thick cardboard. Tape it in place so it can’t slide around.

    • 3). Cut along the line of the traced image with a craft knife. Work slowly to ensure you stay on the line, creating a clean cut.

    • 4). Pull the paper off the cardboard and punch out the shape of the heart. Pull off any frayed sections of cardboard.

    • 5). Prop your medical text up so you can quickly review the detailed image of the heart. Sketch the details of the heart in pencil on the cardboard.

    • 6). Add further detail to your heart by adding color. Use colored pencil or acrylic paint (acrylic paint gives you a bold color, but colored pencils are easier to use for many people) to color the heart similar to the coloring used in the text book. This allows you to reference the different sections of the heart easily.

    • 7). Cut out a piece of clear tape as tall as your cardboard heart and set it on a table with the sticky side facing up. Cut a second strip of tape to an identical size and set it next to the first with the sticky side facing up (overlap the pieces by 1/2 inch so they stick together). Continue connecting the tape in this manner until you have a square as tall and wide as your cardboard heart model.

    • 8). Press the detailed side of the cardboard to the sticky tape. Flip it over and smooth the tape over the surface with your fingers. Cut away the excess tape, creating a form-fitting layer of protection over the face of your heart.
