Converting your Crawl Space to Standing Space

    • 1). Dig out a ramp going down to the new depth starting from the entrance of the crawl space. Continue to dig out your crawl space, staying at least 3 feet away from the support pillars. Certain soil types are not as suitable for digging out crawl spaces since the foundation of the house rests in that area. In some areas, you may also want to bring in someone who can do radon testing.

    • 2). Pour footings at least 12 inches deep for new support posts. The new footings, about 3 x 3 feet, should be as close as possible to the existing support posts. For added security, shore up the existing posts with an adjustable steel beam. Once the new footer is poured and hardened, take another adjustable steel beam and place it on the footer. Adjust it until the post is flush with the new ceiling.

    • 3). Replace the remaining crawl-space support posts with basement-deep ones.

    • 4). Pour your concrete floor. Waterproof it with a specialized sealer. Make sure that it is level before you let it harden. This is another part of the process for which you may want to consider having a professional do the work. If it is not level then your floors will be slanted.

    • 5). Add studs and drywall for walls. Consider how to moisture-proof the studs and concrete with sealers, vapor barriers and vents so that moisture and mildew does not destroy your new basement. Add electrical wiring and insulation to your new basement. Depending on your location, some municipalities require all additions to homes to have an inspection while being built. Check with a local building inspector on what the protocol is for your area.
