    • 1). Loosen and remove the nut on the bottom of the clutch. Depending on the manufacturer, you can remove the nut by twisting it with your fingers or by loosening it with a drum key.

    • 2). Remove the bottom piece of felt from the clutch.

    • 3). Slide the top hi-hat cymbal onto the clutch, starting at the bottom of the clutch and sliding the long vertical piece of the clutch into the hole in the center of the cymbal, so that the top center of the hi-hat cymbal presses against the top piece of felt.

    • 4). Slide the bottom piece of felt back onto the clutch so that it presses against the bottom of the top hi-hat cymbal.

    • 5). Slide the nut back onto the clutch so that it presses firmly against the bottom piece of felt. Tighten the nut with your fingers or drum key.

    • 6). Place the clutch and cymbal onto the hi-hat stand, lining up the bottom hole of the clutch with the top of the rod on the hi-hat stand. Slide the clutch down to the desired position, usually a centimeter or two above the bottom hi-hat cymbal.

    • 7). Tighten the wing nut on the side of the clutch, which fastens the clutch on the hi-hat stand. Your drop clutch is now installed on your hi-hat stand. To use the drop clutch, press down on the lever using your finger or drumstick. This drops the top hi-hat cymbal onto the bottom hi-hat, enabling you to play them while freeing up your left foot – or right foot if you’re playing a left-handed setup – to play a bass drum pedal or other foot pedal. To reengage the top hi-hat cymbal to the drop clutch, press down on the hi-hat foot pedal, which brings the drop clutch down onto the top hi-hat cymbal, reattaching them together.
