How to Add a Mudroom

    • 1). Remove the hall closet doors. If the closet is deep on the left and right sides, consider having a contractor remove the drywall to expose the entire area and re-frame the space with trim.

    • 2). Install a durable floor such as hardwood or tile in a dark color and texture that will show well and stand up to dirty shoes.

    • 3). Paint the inside of the closet a color in the tan or yellow family to brighten the space and make it feel like part of the house.

    • 4). Use laminated closet organizers or unfinished wood cubby units to build a row of lockers, one for each member of the family if possible. Each locker should have space for shoes, hooks for coats and backpacks and one or two shelves for important papers and keys.

    • 5). If room allows, add a small bench to the mudroom as well as shelves and baskets above or alongside the lockers to hold out-of-season items such as bathing suits in the winter and snow clothes in the summer.
