How to Make Prima Style Fabric Flowers
- 1). Determine how large you want the first flower. Select a square approximately that size, as well as two to four more squares, each increasingly smaller than the last, to form the layers of your flower.
- 2). Use scissors to cut the rough shape of a flower from the largest square of fabric chosen. Do not worry about precision. Repeat with the other squares selected for the first flower. Retain their original sizing order as closely as possible; the second largest square should become the second largest flower, and so on.
- 3). Set a candle on a flat, stable surface and light it. Hold one fabric flower layer so its edge is near the flame. Keep the fabric close enough to the flame for the heat to melt the edge, but not close enough to burn. Slowly turn the layer around so the entire edge of the flower shape is melted by the candle’s flame, causing the edges to curl and pucker. Repeat with each differently-sized layer of the prima flower.
- 4). Layer the pieces of the prima flower on top of each other, with the largest at the bottom and the smallest at the top. Rotate layers as necessary to fill in any gaps between petals, then insert a thumb tack through the center of all the layers to create a hole. Remove the thumb tack and insert a pearl brad through the layers. Affix the brad on the other side by opening its prongs in opposing directions.
- 5). Draw a circle onto a piece of chipboard. This becomes a base for your flower so you may easily attach it to scrapbooking pages. Make the circle approximately the size of the second smallest layer of the prima flower. Cut out the circle and attach to the back side of your prima flower using tacky glue. Let dry.
- 6). Repeat to make as many prima flowers as you want. Use different fabrics and sizes of flowers to determine what technique works best for you.
