How to Mount Transformers in Project Boxes
- 1). Choose a project box large enough to accommodate your transformer with additional room for for switches, circuit boards and wiring.
- 2). Read the transformer specification sheet and find the diameter and spacing of the two mounting holes in the transformer frame. Obtain one ½-inch machine screw, one washer and one nut for each frame hole. Size the hardware to fit the holes.
- 3). Draw a centered line on the bottom of the project box having a length equal to the separation of the two screws. Make the line parallel to the box's edge. Use the ruler as a straightedge. If space allows, offset the line toward one end of the project box to allow more room for switches and a circuit board. Make sure to account for the transformer's width and depth when placing the line. Make a small circle at each end of the line.
- 4). Select a drill bit to match the hardware you'll be using to mount the transformer. Put the bit in the drill's chuck and tighten. Place the project box on a piece of wood to act as a backup for drill penetration. Drill two holes at the circles you marked. Clean the debris and set the wood aside.
- 5). Thread the two screws through the project box from the bottom up, so the screw heads are on the bottom. Slip the washers onto the threads that protrude into the box.
- 6). Line the transformer mounting holes up with the screws and slip the transformer on. Make sure that the transformer's primary side faces the closest end of the box. Thread one nut on each screw protruding through the transformer mounting holes. Tighten the nuts with a suitable nut driver.
