    • 1). Clean the tile and grout to remove as much grease, dirt and grime as possible. Use the abrasive pad to clean, taking care to wear rubber gloves and goggles so that you don't get any of the cleaning agents on your skin or in your eyes. Rinse thoroughly, making sure all traces of the cleaner and pad are removed from the tile.

    • 2). Use very fine sandpaper grain to sand the tile in order to ensure the best possible bond between the pain and the tile. Fine sandpaper is preferable to a rough grain because it reduces the chance for scratching that will remain visible after the paint job is completed. Wear a dust mask to protect against inhaling tile dust. Clean the tile thoroughly with a brush and, if necessary, a a vacuum. Dampen a lint-free cloth to complete the cleaning process.

    • 3). Apply primer directly to the tile. It is best to use extra strength primer since it is going to have to withstand the high humidity associated with bathrooms and showers. Follow the directions that come with the primer for application. Allow to dry.

    • 4). Use a brush to paint 100 percent acrylic latex semi-gloss onto the coat of primer. Allow to dry as recommended and then apply a second coat of paint. Most latex primer and paints used on tile require an extensive waiting period in order to become resistant to abrasion. This period can take up to 14 weeks so make sure that you can avoid using the bathroom for two weeks before embarking upon painting bathroom tile.
