How to Upgrade the Lighting in a Kitchen

    • 1). Increase light around the entire space by using staggered recessed lighting. Staggering the fixtures around the room will flood the space with light instead of only lighting up certain areas. Avoid using a single overhead light to illuminate the entire space. Not only will there not be enough light, but a single overhead fixture will overpower the kitchen and create shadows as you try to cook or entertain.

    • 2). Add layers of light throughout the kitchen. Incorporating different sources of light will give the entire room a glow without being too overpowering.

    • 3). Provide a task light for working areas in the kitchen, such as a cutting station or island. For increased visibility, add lighting between the head and the workspace -- ideally under kitchen cabinets. Add lighting in areas often visited, such as the pantry.

    • 4). Provide the space with ambient lighting, which gives the area a softened glow that warms up darkened corners and spaces in the kitchen. Place ambient lighting above cabinets to warm up space between the ceiling and cabinets.

    • 5). Finish off the room with accent and decorative lighting. Accent lighting is often found in cabinets to show off elegant dishes or glassware. Decorative lighting is used more as a statement than for function, for example a chandelier or artisan glass fixture.

    • 6). Add a dimmer switch to lighting fixtures. Dimming the lighting during meals or entertaining provides the space with intimate ambiance.
