    • 1). Use pencil and paper to sketch out your ideas for you home. You will want to create separate sheets for each floor in your home. Write down the measurements for each wall, window, door and other feature.

    • 2). Go to Google and download the freeware version of SketchUp (see Resources). Then install the program to your computer. A shortcut will appear on your desktop.

    • 3). Open SketchUp. Select the default figure in the view and delete it if you wish. It is there as a sizing reference, but you can instead use the numerical display in the lower right corner to know how long, or high, you are making a line or object.

    • 4). Select the "Line" tool from the toolbar and use it to draw the outline of the plans for your first floor on the ground plane. Use the colored axis guides to make sure you are drawing on the correct plane. The sizing display in the corner will give you the length of each line you draw. Make them the same as the measurements you wrote down in Step 1.

    • 5). Use the "Line" tool to draw in the inner walls of your first floor on the outline shape. Now select the "Push/Pull" tool and use it to select and raise the walls to the height you want.

    • 6). Use the same techniques shown in Steps 4-5 to create the other floors of your house, placing these next to (not on) the other floors. You now have a cutaway 3D floor plan of your house you can show to your professional. Select "File" and click "Save." Name your file and save it.
