How to Buy a Distance Measuring Wheel
- 1). Choose between a mechanical wheel and electronic wheel. Mechanical wheels don't require batteries and are simple to operate but only present one unit of measure. Electronic wheels require batteries but, with the push of a button, can present the measurement in inches, tenths of feet, feet or yards as quickly as they can present decimeters or meters.
- 2). Decide whether you will use the measuring wheel inside, outside or both. Measuring wheels are usually categorized by the size of the wheel---its diameter through the center hub. Wheel setups for use indoors are generally smaller overall, including a smaller wheel. If you plan to use the wheel outdoors, you should consider whether or not it comes with a case, which will prevent the wheel from transferring dirt or mud to your vehicle.
- 3). Establish your measuring requirements. If you buy a mechanical wheel, you must decide whether you need to measure in metric sizes, inches and feet, or tenths of feet. On most electronic wheels, you can push a button and select which unit of measurement you want to use.
- 4). Find a source. Distance measuring wheels are available at most engineering supply stores or online. As with all products, one advantage of buying locally is that, should you encounter a problem, the store can take care of it in a single visit if the wheel is under warranty, whereas an online purchase will require you to return the wheel to the manufacturer.
